How to be happy in your career
These are the things that make me stay in my current job – and yes they make it all worth it!
I ran into a good friend of mine from college several weeks ago. Good thing we took that opportunity to catch up on each other’s lives. First thing she told me was that she just quit her position as a digital marketing assistant in a business media company after 8 months. She felt unhappy working there for a variety of reasons. She was overworked compared to her fellow staff because she’s being given more workload.
Another thing is that she sees no growth from her position given the limited senior slots in the company. And there are other things she mentioned about her benefits and stuff. I could not help but feel bad for her and tried my best to show sympathy even if i am in a different place as far as my thoughts about my career are concerned.
After we parted ways that night, I realized how lucky I really am with the way things are going in my job. It’s still not perfect in any way but the advantages of staying there outweigh the setbacks- which aren’t too many by the way.
I’m with my company as a brand identity developer for three years now and there are times that i also considered leaving especially when you encounter problems that seem unbearable at the time. It’s not like everything is rosy and sunny. Being happy with your work or with any aspect of your life is still a choice at the end of the day. And this is why I choose to stay with the company that I work for.
Let me get this straight, I’m making money but it’s not like I’m going to be a multi-millionaire anytime soon or even perhaps in the near future. But the salary I’m getting is good enough to pay the bills and make my single life comfortable. In proportion to my duties, I would say it is commensurate. Some might think that it is a big paycheck with the bonuses and allowances that come with the package. In any case, I’m pretty happy with it.
As a brand identity developer, pressure and stress are normal in my everyday grind. It is very challenging to come up with fresh designs and strategies each time. It gets draining in the process but guess what, I think I am good at it. And more importantly I enjoy doing my work. The feeling of high whenever I see my logos and designs resonate with customers makes my heart sing with quiet pride. There is a sense of fulfillment there.
I started out as a part-time layout artist and I was fortunate to be offered a full time position after three months. And more than a year later I was promoted to my current job. At this point, there are talks about another promotion and I am among the top candidates. I hope I’ll get it but if I don’t it’s perfectly fine. The fact that I was considered makes all the sleepless nights, burning the midnight oil and nerve wracking buzzer- beating deadlines pay off.
I want to build my 401K for my eventual retirement . I will not be able to enjoy its full benefits if I will transfer from one job to another. As they say, a rolling stone gathers no moss. Typically, there is a vesting schedule of about two to three years so that you will be able to claim your employer’s contributions to your pension. In addition, our company gives annual increases to keep up with cost of living inflation of employees. Chances are, you will have to reset your income expectations if you move to another company unless you get pirated.
Ok, my boss and I don’t always see eye to eye especially when we have contradicting ideas. And probably if he weren’t my boss, we wouldn’t even become friends. But for the most part, I admire him for being a good leader- his impeccable work ethic inspires me to give my all by bringing my A game with quality output. And somehow we maintain a respectful professional relationship inside the office. We also go out for a drink sometimes with our other colleagues as well.
My work entails me to have good rapport with other members of our team.
We bounce ideas off each other while throwing jokes here and there to dissipate tension when it is brewing. I look forward to arriving at the office especially coming from the weekend to see my officemates who have become close to me that I can count on them when I have personal issues. Work that is otherwise toxic can be somehow bearable when you get along with the people you work with.
There are days that I can get so busy at work that I barely talk to my boyfriend during the week. However, I am still able to have a good work and life balance in general. My job is just a part of my life therefore it is not my life. I somehow manage to nurture relationships with my family and loved-ones even if i don’t see them as often. I make sure that i don’t bring work outside the office premises as I should allocate my time for my personal life.
Our company pulls all the stops when it comes to outings. We would go to a nice new beach resort where we also hold fun team building activities. I have also won a couple of employee of the month awards where we get 100 dollars each. Being an employee of more than two years entitles me to significant discounts at our company’s affiliated merchants. Topping it off, I have a comprehensive health insurance package and we even have a complete fitness gym with an in-house trainer. There’s nothing more I can ask for.
Again, my current employment may still be far from perfect and i don’t think there is even such a thing. But mine could very well be the closest thing. I hope you can find yours, too.
